Product description

Authors: ed. Bogusław Dybaś, Anna Ziemlewska

‘Jan III Sobieski is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in the history of Poland, and in the Polish collective memory he does not raise much controversy, although research on his era, especially intensive recently, reveals more and more interesting and not always clearly positive aspects. These studies translate, to varying degrees, into the image widespread in society, and in this sense the victor of Vienna is an interesting example for researchers of the processes of shaping collective memory. At the same time, the fact that the term ‘victor of Vienna’ is a synonym for the name and surname of the king (and previously the hetman) clearly proves that this figure resides not only in Polish collective memory. This is an obvious truism, but the fact that the most important events in the biography of this ruler are the relief granted to the Habsburg capital and the victorious battle fought on 12 September, 1683, makes Jan Sobieski one of the most recognisable Polish historical figures in the world’. From the introduction by Prof. Bogusław Dybaś
