Product description
Translation and scholarly work: Katarzyna Pękacka-Falkowska, Halina Bogusz
In the years 1706–1707, Christian Heinrich Erndtel from Dresden, a graduate of medical studies in Leipzig, went on a scholarly journey to England and the Netherlands. During it, he met with the most important doctors and naturalists of the era, visited numerous cabinets of curiosities, art galleries, botanical gardens and anatomical theatres, and also conducted in-depth research in the field of anatomy. In his ‘Travel Diary of the Scholar’, in the style of letters to a friend, Erndtel shared his observations and knowledge, described medical research and procedures, as well as botanical discoveries, and combined medicine and natural science. Thanks to the erudite introduction by Katarzyna Pękacka-Falkowska and footnotes explaining Erndtel’s account, the modern reader can take a fascinating journey back in time, to the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, when the horizons of natural and human sciences were expanding in the free exchange of thoughts and letters.
