Product description
Editing and introduction: Jarosław Krawczyk
The anthology is a collection of texts created around the reconstruction of two buildings that were and are extremely dear to the heart of every Pole: Wawel Cathedral and Wawel Castle. This book is a living record of a discussion that was sometimes very heated, because Poles' national emotions had to be at play in the matter of the sacred hill. Beneath them lies a whole set of conservation and restoration problems and still relevant questions: what is a monument for a given culture, how far can one go in the search for its 'optimal condition', how many historical layers are necessary, and can they be preserved? These questions, which are fundamental to the issues of monument protection, are answered by the most eminent specialists of that time. The series devoted to the problems of monument protection also includes three other collections of texts by outstanding authors whose views have significantly influenced the contemporary practice of heritage management: ‘Monument and History’, ‘Kazimierz Renewed’ and’ Alois Riegl, Georg Dehio and the Cult of Monuments’.
